Magic defies the laws of the world, thus it is the most abstruse and most coveted art in all of Endland. Magic may take many forms; Symbolists etch ancient runes of power into stone tablets, Elementalists gesture forth the power of nature, and Wizards create baffling cantrips and illusions.
However, harnessing arcane power is no effortless task. Those who become magicians are cursed with a voice that lingers in their head. It manifests the sound of the one person they love the most, whether it be a parent, child, or lover. The voice speaks to them when they are attempting to do magic. It chastises them. it reminds them that what they doing is impossible. It laughs at them. To successfully cast spells, Magi must defeat their voice in an internal argument. Though no words have to be uttered aloud, a mental debate ignites in every Magi using magic. Over time, the voice does not wait for them to cast a spell to speak to them. It lurks in the forefront of their minds, whispers doubts, yells profanities, clouds thoughts. Weak-willed magi are driven insane, becoming treacherous as they are driven mad by the criticisms of their compatriot’s voices. Stronger-willed slip into silence as the voice gets louder. They must focus immensely to keep it at bay, and all sense of emotion and speech eventually dissapears.
